Always one to try and pick a fight, perennial UFC lightweight contender and fan favourite Nate Diaz has continued to taunt his rival, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, in what is likely a bid to attempt to secure a third bout with the extremely popular Irishman, claiming to have knocked McGregor out in their first bout.
Diaz exploded into the mainstream consciousness when he accepted a fight with McGregor at UFC 196 on just 11 days notice after lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was forced to pull out of his title bout with McGregor due to injury.
Diaz had previously drawn attention to himself when he called out the Irish mixed martial arts star during a post-fight interview, declaring that McGregor was “taking everything [he’d] worked for”.
Diaz and McGregor were offered the bout at 170 pounds, instead of their traditional 155 pounds due to the short notice, with the UFC seemingly betting that Diaz would quickly be dispatched by McGregor.
The heavy betting favourite, McGregor, was tapped out by Diaz on the ground after being rocked by a series of punches that saw McGregor stumbling around the cage in a daze. McGregor had looked to headhunt early in the bout but was unable to hurt Diaz significantly, leading to him fatiguing significantly in the second round. The two men would eventually meet once more at UFC 202 where McGregor would win a hard fought decision over the Stockton native.
“That happens to me in fights a lot,” Diaz said on the “MMA and More” podcast.
“I start teeing off on them and they shoot and it’s like ‘Oh, I got choked.’ You got choked on purpose because that was the easy way out. You didn’t want to get hit anymore.
“I wish if I could do it all again, I would have just kept hitting his ass because of all the backlash I got.”
“All this ‘Nate’s jiu-jitsu was better,’ I’m like ‘No, you got knocked out.” Diaz continued. “You got knocked out. But, you shot.’ It was a way out. It was like quitting.”
“That was a knockout. You know what I’m saying?”
