The UFC has always had something big in store for the annual International Fight Week in July.
The biggest one in recent memory was UFC 200, which took place in July 2016, and featured the return of Brock Lesnar to the UFC, as well as a fight between Daniel Cormier and Anderson Silva, among others.
This year, the UFC is once again preparing for a monumental event that would surely be remembered for a long time.
If all things go as planned, and no more mishaps similar to UFC 223 happens, this year’s International Fight Week feature will be UFC 226, which will be headlined by a heavyweight super-fight between champions Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.
When it was announced in January, no other fights were said to be part of UFC 226.
But on Thursday, another fight has been added to the mix.
As reported by Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the said card will also be featuring a bantamweight fight between number three-ranked contender Raphael Assuncao and number 12-ranked fighter Rob Font.
Since losing to current 135-pound champion T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 200, Assuncao (26-5, with 14 victories by stoppage) has managed to redeem himself by putting on a three-fight win streak against Aljamain Sterling, Marlon Moraes, and Matthew Lopez, respectively.
His most recent fight which was against Lopez, took place last November in Norfolk, Virginia.
Because Lopez failed to make weight for the fight, the matchup was instead stipulated for a 138.5 catch-weight.
Nonetheless, Assuncao proved why he deserves a spot in the top five by knocking out Lopez in the third round. He also took home an extra $50,000 for the Performance of the Night bonus.
Font, on the other hand, is looking to make his way further up the ladder and closer to the UFC bantamweight title.
With a record of 5-2 in the UFC, he is looking to extend his win streak against the formidable Assuncao.
The 30-year-old Font (15-3, with 11 victories by stoppage), last saw action at UFC 220 last January 20th against Thomas Almeida, where he won the fight via second-round TKO. His only two losses in the UFC were courtesy of John Lineker via unanimous at UFC 198, and Pedro Munhoz via first-round submission last October in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
UFC 226 is slated to take place on Saturday, July 7th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
