If you’ve never come across Charlie Zelenoff, here’s a bit of background for ya: Zelenoff (or ‘Charlie Z’, as he likes to be known) is a wannabe boxer who frequents gyms in the Los Angeles area in order to find people to have a bit of ‘light sparring’ with.
At least, that’s what he tells them he wants to do. But as soon as they touch gloves, Zelenoff starts throwing wild haymakers in an attempt to knock his unsuspecting opponents out.
Caught completely off guard, his bemused combatants often cop a heavy shot to the face and get knocked down which leads to Zelenoff claiming to the camera (held by his friend) that he has scored another knockout victory.
Either that or they defend themselves and Charlie Z asks them if they’ve had enough. When they indicate that they have had enough, he turns to the camera and boasts that he has notched up another win.
On the odd occasion that a sparring partner has fought back, Zelenoff runs away, calls timeouts, or does whatever he can to put distance between himself and an arse whooping, before inevitably claiming victory.
He even once managed to have a sparring session with Floyd Mayweather Sr. It didn’t end well for Charlie Z – after being took to school, he called one of his trademark timeouts and then snuck up on Mayweather Sr and clobbered him with a cheap shot, which caused Mayweather’s entourage to jump into the ring and stomp the sh*t out of him.
Deontay Wilder kicked his arse a couple of years ago after Zelenoff had been trolling him for months, using racist slurs and making fun of Wilder’s daughter, who suffers from spina bifida.
But although Wilder beat the bully up, he didn’t completely destroy him with a knockout punch or make Zelenoff admit that he lost the fight (since he ran away), so of course, Charlie Z began telling people that he had actually won.
Luckily for us, not long after that Wilder fight, he decided to take on a 16-year-old amateur boxer who had no plans to go easy on the him. If you haven’t seen this already, I’m not going to spoil it for you. It’s definitely worth a watch, though – even if it’s not your first time!
