The upcoming UFC 219 card could very well be the best event the UFC has put on for 2017. That’s a big call considering how well UFC 217 went off.
Three champions were dethroned that night with a slew of highlights taking place, including Michael Bisping being choked out by Georges “Rush” St-Pierre, Joanna Jedrzejczyk being knocked out by Rose Namajunas and T.J. Dillashaw walking away as the bantamweight champion for a second time with his knockout of Cody Garbrandt.
So far the most interesting bouts will see Dominick Cruz take on Jimmie Rivera, Carlos Condit fighting Neil Magny, Khalil Rountree facing off with kickboxing legend Gokhan Saki and Khabib Nurmagomedov making his long-awaited return to the octagon against knockout artist Edson Barboza.
All of this, with the main event still yet to be named.
How do you make a card with a lot of compelling fights even bigger? You add Conor McGregor, of course.
“We are planning on it [Conor headlining UFC 219]. He wants to and we want him to so, we’ll see what happens,” said UFC president Dana White. McGregor has previously said he would return to the octagon only when he was recognised as a co-promoter, but that hasn’t seemed to stop White from wanting him on the New Years Eve card.
“Look, the kid wants some money, the kid wants some stuff but if there’s anybody out there who’s worth it, it’s Conor McGregor. We’ve always figured it out with him and we’ll figure it out again.”
And just a few hours ago, Los Angeles Times Reporter, Lance Pugmire, confirmed that Dana intends to hash out the main event this week, with a real possibility that it will be Conor McGregor.
Dana White says he’ll hash out the UFC 219 main event for Las Vegas by the end of the week and said @TheNotoriousMMA return “will be in Vegas” and “could be” on that Dec. 30 date.

Fans seem to believe that the headliner for the card will either be a bout between McGregor and Tony Ferguson to unify the UFC lightweight title and interim title or between Holly Holm and Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. Either matchup could do big numbers for the UFC, who have been looking to bring in as much money as possible following their recent sale to the WME|IMG media conglomerate.
