While everyone thinks it’s happening, the executive says it’s not.
There has been too much hype on a boxing match between undefeated champions Khabib Nurmagomedov and Floyd Mayweather after the Russian mixed martial artist called the retired boxer out.
“Let’s go, Floyd. 50-0 vs 27-0, two guys who never lose, why not? Only one king. Let’s go.”
After the daring call out, the former world champion confirmed that a boxing match with the UFC lightweight king is set to happen. While Mayweather did not provide further details, he emphasized that the fight would take place inside the ring, not in the cage.
On an interview with TMZ Sports, Mayweather set forth:
“Oh, we fighting. He called me out. So, he gotta come to my world. I’m my own boss. So, I can’t say what’s going on on Khabib’s end. But, on my end, we can make it happen.”
However, UFC President Dana White isn’t as enthusiastic as they are on this match. Just after Khabib revealed talks had taken place over a fight in Moscow, White blurred the possibility of the bout.
“Don’t pay attention to it.”
On an interview with ESPN, White said Khabib cannot switch from MMA to boxing since he is fighting under a contract with the UFC.
“Don’t pay attention to it. First of all, the Mayweather team has not approached us at all.
“Khabib is under contract with the UFC. We haven’t talked to anybody from the Mayweather team.
“Floyd is very good at getting his name back out there when he’s ready to.”
After Khabib defeated former champ-champ Conor McGregor at UFC 229, most fans think a rematch is well-deserved. However, White isn’t even thinking about it as well.
“I haven’t even thought about a rematch… As a fight fan, you’ve got to go with Tony (Ferguson).”
