Jorge Masvidal could be defending his ‘baddest motherf***er title’ at Dana White’s Fight Island against the promotion’s biggest draw in Conor McGregor.
The Miami, Florida native captured the ‘BMF’ title at UFC 244 last November, following a doctor stoppage win against Nate Diaz.
With three massive wins under his name including the fastest knockout in UFC history, Masvidal is likely to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight championship on his next fight.
Masvidal and Usman have been in a war of words since their confrontation at the Super Bowl media day and almost shared the cage last month at the cancelled UFC 249 pay-per-view event.
Aside from the title shot, UFC president Dana White said they have other option for Masvidal.
“We’re talking about a few different things. We have something else interesting for Masvidal that we were just talking about yesterday,” he told ESPN.
“We’ll see. We’ll see how this whole thing plays out. To start speculating down the road now is too soon. Let’s get by these three fights in Florida and then we’ll figure out what’s next. We’re talking about different possibilities with those guys.”
Very Good Point
In a recent episode of The Menace and the Man podcast, the UFC head honcho said a fight between Masvidal and McGregor for the BMF belt could go down at the Fight Island.
“The Usman fight is the fight that makes sense. It’s the fight that needs to happen if Masvidal wants a title shot. But, yeah, there’s another interesting fight out there for him right now,” White said.
“Very good point. That’s a possibility too,” he said when asked about the BMF fight.
While a potential showdown between ‘Gamebred’ and ‘The Notorious’ would be big for the UFC, White said there are other matchups bigger than this fight.
“I don’t know, man. I think Conor-Khabib is a massive fight; Conor against anybody is a massive fight. Tony and Khabib if that thing can happen it’s a massive fight.”
Active Fighter
After a 15-month hiatus, McGregor returned to action last January as he took on Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone’ in the main event of UFC 246.
The Irishman announced his comeback with a sensational win, finishing the MMA veteran just 40 seconds into the opening round with shoulder strikes, a head kick, and ground-and-pound.
Following the win, McGregor said he wants to be more active this year as he looks to fight one more time at 170 pounds before facing Khabib in a rematch.
