Jorge Masvidal Calls Out Four-Weight Boxing Champion Canelo Alvarez

Jorge Masvidal has racked up three straight massive wins in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

While a shot at the welterweight title makes sense for his next outing, Masvidal has brought up the idea of him crossing over to boxing to fight a four-division world champion in Canelo Alvarez.

On Saturday night, the 34-year old fighter continued to establish his name in the sport after a masterful performance against the UFC fan-favourite, Nate Diaz, at UFC 244.

Winning the ‘baddest motherf***er’ title, Masvidal stamped his class on Diaz, dominating their welterweight bout while scoring two knockdowns, en route to a doctor stoppage (technical knockout) victory.

Prior to this win, the streaking welterweight scored two brutal knockouts as he sent Darren Till to the shadow realm at UFC London before rewriting the history with a five-second finish of Ben Askren at UFC 239 – the fastest ever in the UFC.

Now boasting a heavier resume, Masvidal has expressed his desire to fight Alvarez in a boxing showdown.

Dead Serious

Shortly after capturing the BMF title in New York, Masvidal called out Alvarez, saying they might be destined to clash in the future after fighting on the same night last Saturday.

Alvarez’s light-heavyweight title showdown against Sergey Kolvalev served as the second attraction as DAZN decided to put it on delay until the Diaz vs Masvidal was over.

“I can box and I want to break Canelo’s face,” Masvidal told reporters at the post-fight press conference, per CBS Sports.

“I can box, move, work different angles, and I feel like fighting him.”

“Maybe it’s a sign that I fought today and he did too, but I want to have the opportunity to get in the ring with him.”

“I’m dead serious about trying to fight Canelo Alvarez.”

“It’d give me a nice little change. I’ll take my talents over there.”

Capable Of Upset

Confident that he is capable of pulling off an upset, the Miami, Florida native admitted that ‘Canelo’ is the better boxer but size and power could be the game-changer said Masvidal.

“I feel like I could shock the world. Is Canelo a better boxer than me? Has he thrown 10,000 jabs more than me because that’s what he does morning and night, just box?”

“Yeah. He’s a better boxer. But can I bring some elements that boxers ain’t used to that are in the legal realm of boxing and throw Canelo off his game? F— yes, man.”

“I’m a natural, bigger dude. I punch like a f—ing truck so long as I’ve got those boxing gloves on and I’m not afraid of breaking my hand because I’ve got that cast on.”

“I feel like I could be a legitimate ass threat in there. Plus I’m a little longer than him, too.”

Masvidal, though, stressed that the callout does not aim to disrespect the boxing champion but to dismiss Canelo’z claim that MMA fighters are no threat in the ring.

“This is not to disrespect Canelo, because I think he’s a beast. It’d be an honor to get in the ring with him.”

“But he did say some s— like no MMA fighters would be a challenge and this and that. I beg to differ, my brother.”

“I would really love to be the guy to try and end his f—ing face. Just destroy him. Just erase him.”
