Jon Jones Accepts Plea Deal To Avoid Jail Time From DWI Arrest

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated (DWI) as he reached an agreement with prosecutors days after his arrest in Albquerque.

Police officers responded to a gunshot in Albuquerque last Thursday and found Jones in his vehicle, leading to his arrest as he was charged with aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and no proof of insurance.

As part of the deal, Jones is required to serve a four-day house arrest, where he may wear an ankle monitor, and complete a 48-hour community service to avoid jail time.

He also agreed to pay a fine of $500, attend a 90-day drug treatment outpatient program, and install an ignition interlock device in his car.

”Jones took responsibility for his actions early on in the case, and in doing so, the state agreed to one year (of) supervised probation,” Bernalillo County District Attorney spokeperson Michael Patrick said in a statement.

He added: “Normally, the state would be requesting a pre-sentencing report and a recommendation to substance recovery court, however, due to COVID-19 it is not clear the program can accept anyone at this time.”

Unhealthy Relationship With Alcohol

Following the plea deal, Jones finally broke his silence about his latest legal mishap, admitting he has ‘unhealthy relationship with alcohol.’

“While we all work to understand and cope with stress and uncertainties surrounding the current state of our world, I want to express how truly disappointed I am that I have become the source of a negative headline again, especially during these trying times,” Jones siad.

“I am disappointed for letting down the people I care about the most, my family, friends and my fans. This morning I entered into a plea deal with the Albuquerque DA’s office.”

“I accept full responsibility for my actions and I know that I have some personal work to do to which involves the unhealthy relationship I have with alcohol.”

Personal Setback

Jones has thanked his supporters for their ‘continued love’ and has vowed to contribute to the improvement of the community.

“I have dedicated so much time and energy to improve my community, and I will not allow this personal setback to hinder my work within the community when we need it most.”

“I truly appreciate the support I have received from the community of Albuquerque and all my fans around the world.”

“I very much look forward to putting this behind me. Thanks you all for your continued love and support and please take care of yourselves.”
