English welterweight boxer Mason “Nutty” Cartwright has had his dream of capturing a WBO championship put on hold after he was defeated by Darren Tetley in their battle for the vacant European welterweight strap at Elland Road.
It would, unfortunately, be the first loss of the young pugilist’s career.
The 25-year-old dominated the first few rounds of the fight before the Yorkshire based Tetley began to push back, with many believing the fight was equal going into the final round.
Tetley had managed to land a series of wicked shots to his opponent’s jaw, eventually resulting in a ghastly cut being opened up on Cartwright’s lip, reminiscent of Robbie Lawler’s lip following his welterweight title bout with Rory “The Red King” Macdonald at UFC 189.
The fight doctor was called in to assess the damage to Cartwright’s face, which was pouring blood at the time. The fight was quickly waved off, with Cartwright upset and dejected by the decision whilst Tetley looked to be on the verge of tears as he celebrated his hard-earned victory.
“Sorry everyone got caught and sustained a cut which was deemed to be too bad to continue, one thing I can say is I shown I can box,” Cartwright said following the bout.
Great fight regardless of the unfortunate end congrats to Darren Tetley when I’m all healed how about the rematch?”
Cartwright was rushed to hospital following the fight, where he later posted a video to show off the damage his lip had accumulated during the bout. He later posted images of his lip after it was finally re-attached to his face.
“I’m fixed let’s go. Woke up a bit gutted from the outcome of last night, but for people who tuned in to the fight seen what I got to offer… We go again!
“No words needed, this how much last night meant to me, I can’t help the unfortunate outcome but I shown my boxing ability and I will be back. If it was up to me I would have fought the 10th round all day, show my boxing ability I’ll be back.”
Cartwright will surely be back in title contention soon after having shown of such heart and grit during what was a back and forth roller coaster of a fight, but we’re betting he’s going to be sitting on the sidelines for some time while his lip heals up.
