WATCH: Frankie Edgar Absolutely MAULS Young Mexican Prospect Yair Rodríguez

A UFC 211 bout with huge implications for the featherweight division saw fan favourite Frankie Edgar take on superstar in the making, Yair Rodríguez.

Rodríguez (10-1 before this fight), coming off a spectacular 2nd round knockout victory over MMA legend BJ Penn in January, was eager to make a foray into the top five rankings with a victory over the number two ranked Edgar.

In the leadup to the fight, El Pantera said that he felt disrespected by Edgar’s claim that it was a ‘win-win’ situation for Rodriguez due to Edgar’s popularity.

“I was thinking like, ‘who the fu*k does he think he is?'” Rodriguez said. “I don’t care. Like, I’m not looking for his fame, you know? Like, I want my own sh*t. I want my own stuff.”

As for his motivation, Rodriguez said that fighting was all he cares about:

“I have no friends. I don’t go out to party. I don’t do sh*t. Like, the only thing I do is training for fighting…I don’t have girlfriend. I don’t have nothing to focus on but fighting.”

For his part, Edgar (21-5-1 before this fight) acknowledged the excitement that Rodriguez brought to the table:

“He’s got this hype around him. People believe in him. The UFC must believe in him to put him in this position and they’re hoping big things for this guy. He’s a Mexican fighter, I know they really want to get into that market and he brings a flashy style, an exciting style so the fans are into him.”

But despite all the furore surrounding the newcomer, Edgar was keen to point out that it doesn’t necessarily translate to victory inside the Octagon.

“I’m not concerned with the hype he’s got. I’m just going to go in there and do what I do. If I do what I do, I know I’m going to get my hand raised.”

Frankie Edgar proceeded to smash that hype into a million pieces as he absolutely demolished Rodriguez over two rounds until the fight was stopped on the advice of the ringside physician.

Despite giving up size and reach to his opponent, Edgar showed no fear getting right in his face as soon as the fight started.
