On Saturday, April 21st, the UFC will be returning to the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City for the ninth time since 2014 to hold an event bannered by an explosive 155-pound fight. Number-four ranked contender Edson Barboza will be proving his worth at the top-five spot of one the UFC’s deepest divisions as he faces the formidable “Motown Phenom”, Kevin Lee.
An eight-year veteran of the UFC, the 32-year-old Barboza will be returning to action since he was beaten up to a five-round decision by current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov last December at UFC 219. The Brazilian simply had no answers for the Russian’s continuous onslaught, but he later admitted that he would have fought his cornermen if they called for the fight to be stopped.
”If my corners had stopped the fight, I probably would have fought them all,” Barboza said in an interview with MMAFighting.com in January. “They know me really well, they know what I can handle. I’ve trained with millions of different people, the best boxers in New Jersey and Philadelphia, and they never knocked me down. They know me, they know what I can take, and they knew I could win at any moment.”
Lee, on the other hand, is coming off a loss to interim champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 216 last October. As he now bounces back to his first loss since 2015, Lee plans to win in convincing fashion.
“Domination.” Lee told Submission Radio in a late March interview. “I don’t think the man can go 25 minutes with me. I don’t think really, there’s not a lot of men in this world that can, so it’s gonna be domination. I’m saying by three (rounds) he gets up out of there. But tune into the fight, you’ll see it unfold.”
Co-headlining the event is a featherweight rematch between two renowned veterans of the sport. Frankie Edgar will try to bounce back from his first-ever stoppage loss at the hands of Brian Ortega at UFC 222 last March as he faces Cub Swanson for the second time.
The first time the two men met was at the UFC’s Fight Night event in Austin, Texas, where Edgar won via fifth-round submission. This time, Swanson will try to get the win back and hopefully earn his way back to the top of the heap and in consideration for a title at the stacked 145-pound division.
