After successfully defending his UFC flyweight belt for 11 straight times, Demetrious Johnson became the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. This feat solidifies his bid in the greatest of all time race against the likes of Daniel Cormier, Conor McGregor, and George St.Pierre.
But for him, achieving such high recognition will not only require him to defend his belt for a long time. Johnson believes that a global conquest in the same division will cement that status.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday night, Johnson answered plenty of questions including his legacy in the MMA, which includes the best pound-for-pound recognition and his bid for the GOAT status.
The 31-year old slugger just brushed off his inclusion in the GOAT conversation, but he shared his idea, a wild one, on how he can reach such status.
For him, it requires total domination, not just in the UFC but also around the globe.
“If I was to, like, go out and collect all the belts, now that’s something that’s like, ‘OK, I’ve proven that I’m the best.’ If I was to go to ONE Championship, win the flyweight division there. Go to Rizin, win the flyweight division there. And then go to Bellator … win the belt there. Now this speaks volumes.”
“For me to have every unique looking belt around the world, that’s what gets me excited if you really want to know. That’s where it’s like, ‘You have me interested now.’”
Though Johnson’s idea of cementing the GOAT status can be considered, there is a slim chance that the world’s biggest promotion will allow him to compete in other banners such as ONE Championship and Bellator.
He, however, stressed that he would have considered leaving UFC and achieve this goal if he was younger and single. But since he has now a family to support, Johnson would just love to focus on his work and face whoever climbs up in his weight class.
“I want to fight all the guys in my division. You know? We’ve got new guys coming up, Sergio Pettis looked amazing in his last fight, you got (Jose) ‘Shorty’ Torres, he’s in here now, Kyoji Horiguchi’s in RIZIN tearing things up, so, there’s lots of guys out there, but for me I’m just focused on going one fight at a time.”
