It was the undercard to the highly anticipated Cotto Canelo fight, but the fight between WBC super featherweight champion, Takashi Miura (29-3, 22 KO’s), and Francisco Vargas (23-0, 17 KO’s), was clearly the best fight of the night, with the fighters producing one of the best fights of the year.
The fight was off to a blast in the first round, with both men trading blow for blow.
Miura took control of the fight from the second round, and in the fourth round, he knocked Vargas down for the very first time of his career.
The champion continued to lead the way over the next few rounds. In the eighth round, Vargas hung on only by the sound of the bell. He looked as though he was on his last legs, and with cuts swelling both above and below his right eye, he’d been limited to vision out of a single eye.
Despite all this, his team refused to throw in the towel, sending Vargas back in for the ninth round.
At the beginning of the ninth round, Vargas stunned the crowd when he delivered a series of clean blows, dazing Miura and putting him on the canvas.
Miura managed to gather himself, but from that point on, Vargas was all over him, landing shot after shot. Shortly after, the referee called an end to the fight, awarding the win to Francisco Vargas.
