Colby Covington Calls Out Jorge Masvidal For ‘Friends-Turned-Enemies’ Fight

With the departure of Colby Covington from American Top Team, the Ultimate Fighting Championship can now pursue an intriguing welterweight clash between ‘Chaos’ and Jorge Masvidal.

And the former welterweight contender believes this is the only way to settle his beef with the ‘baddest motherf***er’ titlist.

Masvidal and Covington are former training partners at the Coconut Creek, Florida-based gym. But their relationship turned sour when the UFC considered Masvidal as a replacement for the scrapped UFC 244 fight between Covington and Usman.

‘Chaos’ said his old friend was jealous of his achievements and that Masvidal used him for his own benefit while ‘Gamebred’ claimed it was Covington’s failure to pay his MMA coach that caused the bad blood between them.

The ‘BMF’ champ is currently the strongest candidate for the next title shot, following three straight wins last year, but he recently expressed his interest in a rematch with Nate Diaz.

Scared

In a recent interview with The Score, Covington criticized his former teammate for turning down the Kamaru Usman title bout and challenged him to a ‘friends-turned-enemies’ showdown.

“It would definitely be the friends-turned-enemies angle with ‘Journeyman,’ ‘Street Judas,’ Jorge Masvidal. Jorge can’t read, he can’t write, he can’t spell and he definitely can’t fight,” he said.

“What’s going on? Why does [Masvidal] not want to fight Usman? Why’s he holding out? Why’s he scared? Maybe there’s something going on that we don’t know about.

Covington added: “Maybe Jorge wants ‘America’s champ,’ maybe he wants the ‘People’s Champ,’ maybe he wants Donald Trump’s favorite fighter, and maybe he wants Miami’s favorite fighter, because he claims to be from Miami.”

“But, everybody knows I’m the king of Miami right now and I run the streets of Miami. The UFC knows that I’ve expressed my interest and I want my rematch with ‘Marty FakeNewsman’ which I deserve. Or, I want this fight with Journeyman Jorge Masvidal.”

Running Away

If the fight doesn’t come to fruition, Covington said Masvidal should be blamed because “he tucks his tail in between his legs and runs away like the good little (expletive) that he is.”

Taking aim at Masvidal’s MMA record, Covington told MMA Junkie: “He doesn’t want to fight the best in the world, and we found out he’s all hype.”

“He’s a 50-50 journeyman. Look at his record. His resume speaks for itself. He’s been knocked out. He’s been tapped out. Back in high school, he dropped out, and when we used to live together, I kicked him out. He’s a little (expletive).”
