Alvarez Hinted Johnson’s Arrival in One Championship
As the talks about the possible exchange of UFC and ONE Championship prominent fighters, the former UFC and Bellator champ, Eddie Alvarez, hailed his fellow athlete, Johnson as “one of the greatest guys – if not the greatest” in the sport.
After an eight-fight UFC stint that included a reign as the organization’s 155-pound title holder, Alvarez signed with ONE Championship. When Alvarez was asked if he knew anything about Johnson moving to One, he replied: “I’ve learned over time, that if you learn about a rumour in MMA, it’s actually true.
“It would be my honour if Demetrious Johnson and I are the first two guys to go to One.
“I’ve always looked up to him, and I’ve always thought he was one of the greatest guys. If not the greatest – in the sport of MMA.”
Chairman Chatri Sityodtong along with the organization’s founder, had told Alvarez that there will be other large names from the US even before he signed with One. Those ‘other large names’ would join the organisation after him.
According to Chatri, One was on the cusp of making more “major signings”. Whilst Johnson, however, he would only say:
“Demetrious Johnson is the No.1, pound-for-pound, greatest martial artist in history, and his extraordinary achievements speak for themselves. But what I’m most impressed by him is his character, values and life story.”
