Rose Namajunas Just Stunned The World By KOing The “Greatest Women’s MMA Fighter Ever”

At most UFC events, a strawweight title fight between Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Rose Namajunas would be the main show but due to UFC 217 being utterly stacked, it wasn’t even the co-main. Still, UFC fans around the world were eagerly anticipating this clash at Madison Square Garden, New York.

After her last title defence – a unanimous decision over Jessica Andrade – Jędrzejczyk told UFC President Dana White that she wanted to try and tie Ronda Rousey’s record of six title defences in the city that never sleeps.

“I’m very happy that Dana agreed with me, and here we go,” she said during a pre-fight press conference. “I want to tie Ronda Rousey’s record of six title defences [for a woman] and become the first female fighter with seven title fights. It’s a big deal.”

In going for the record, the Pole said that she planned to put on a show for the fans:

“I beat all the challengers from top to bottom. Now it’s going to be my ninth fight in the UFC, and the time went so fast. I just work hard, and hard work pays off. That’s why I’m here, why I will fight at Madison Square Garden. We know that I can put on a show. It’s all about trust. I always prepare good. I put on good fights, and they can always count on me.”

Still, she wasn’t taking the dangerous ‘Thug Rose’ lightly:

“She’s very talented, she’s still young, but she’s getting closer and closer to this belt,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s very sneaky, very tricky,” she added. “We all know that her jiu-jitsu is on point.”

Despite Jedrzejczyk’s wariness, the bookmakers thought that she had it in the bag and installed her as the biggest favourite on the card at $1.16 while Namajunas was a huge underdog at $5.25.

Thug Rose however pulled off the massive upset at Madison Square Garden. Joanna was confident and taunting right up until the opening bell. Joanna refused the glove tap and Thug Rose pushed her away.

The fight was over in a matter of minutes, with Rose dropping Joanna early and proving it was a sign of what was ahead (the finish is at the bottom of the page).

Just moments later Rose landed a left hook which disconnected Joanna’s legs. Further ground and pound forced big John McCarthy to step in.
