Ukranian boxing star Vasyl Lomachenko has added another argument to his case for being the pound for pound best boxer in the world with a fantastic win over challenger Miguel Marriaga. Lomachenko came into the bout a heavy favourite, and it quickly became clear why.
He toyed with Marriaga, put him down on the canvas twice and managed to win the bout by seventh round knockout when Marriaga’s team declared “no more,” in front of over 4000 fans at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
Marriaga had been getting lit up by Lomachenko in the seventh round, and Marriaga had eaten some extremely brutal punishment as a result. “I did everything by the plan that we had,” Lomachenko said after the bout.

He now holds a record of 9-1 with 7 knockouts and is considered to be one of the greatest amateur boxers ever with a record of 396-1. He has now held his 130-pound title for three consecutive bouts.
“I never saw anything like this. He’s unbelievable,” said promoter Bob Arum following the fight. “Not only does he have the knowledge, he has the skill set that I’ve never seen before. Fast, reflexes, everything and he really entertains. Who else did that? Muhammad Ali.”

Marriaga went on to admit that he had been no match for the pressure Lomachenko had unleashed on him. “He dominated the fight,” he said. “I connected with some good punches, but I couldn’t get the result I was looking for. I wanted to continue the fight, but my corner stopped the fight. He basically overwhelmed me with pressure.”

The opening rounds saw Lomachenko starting to land stiff jabs and body shots, and rarely being hit back for his trouble. He started to work body-head combinations in the second round with Marriaga seemingly having no answers for the crafty Ukrainian striking. The third round saw Lomachenko landing a straight left cleanly that dropped Marriaga to the canvas. The two battled on for four more rounds, but it became clear at the end of the seventh round that Marriaga had absorbed an absolute barrage of punishment.
