WATCH: Dana White Appears On Conan O’Brien And Discusses Mayweather Vs McGregor
UFC president Dana White has been shooting down the idea of a Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor superfight for months. He even went as far as saying at a post fight press conference that the chances of the fight happening were slim to none.
“Here’s what I think he chances are: About the same of me being the backup quarterback for Brady on Sunday,” said White.
Well it appears White has changed his mind.
In an appearance on “Conan” on Wednesday, White said a deal is not yet finalized for the lucrative event, but suggested it might only be a matter of time.
“I do think it’s going to happen,” White said. “I think it’s going to be a tough deal, because, obviously, there are a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always make it tougher.
“[But] on the flip side, there’s so much money involved, I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.”
In January, White promised an “epic fall” for McGregor, if he attempted to box without the UFC’s permission.
McGregor, 28, is the UFC’s lightweight champion and remains under exclusive contract.
“A lot of things make this fight intriguing,” White said. “Conor McGregor is huge. He’s in the prime of his career. Floyd is 40. Floyd has always had problems with southpaws; Conor is a southpaw, and Conor hits hard. When he hits people, they go. Floyd is definitely not knocking him out. That’s for sure.
“I’m not saying Conor would win this boxing match, but it sure makes it interesting.”
Mayweather, who retired in 2015 with a professional record of 49-0, recently announced he’d officially come out of retirement to box McGregor.
He obviously has a lot of opportunities right now,” Dana while speaking with TMZ Sports about what might be next for McGregor.
“Tony Ferguson is out there. The Floyd Mayweather thing is out there. We’ll see how this thing plays out. Yeah, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for my business, but I would never stop Conor from making that kind of money.”
Middleweight champion Michal Bisping reigited discussion about a potential McGregor Mayweather super-fight when talking on a recent episode of his podcast, “Believe You Me” about the why Mayweather has decided to make his return to the ring after retiring in 2015 following his victory over Manny Pacquiao.
“My bet is that the fight will happen,” said Bisping. “Will it happen in June? I don’t know, that might be a bit too soon. But from what I understand, I was talking to someone in Las Vegas and I heard that Floyd recently got scammed out of a lot of money. The number was very, very big. I don’t think Floyd needs the money, but he wants to replace this money that he got swindled out of.”
The world famous boxer recently had his Las Vegas home robbed while he was out celebrating his 40th birthday in Los Angeles. Was something important taken from the home, or has Mayweather been stung in some other way? The middleweight champion of the world didn’t offer any reasoning, beyond saying that he’d received the news “from a friend of a friend of a friend.”
