UFC Champ Cris Cyborg Has a Theory About the Holly Holm-Megan Anderson Booking
It is safe to say that the UFC’s women’s featherweight division is pretty much non-existent as of the moment.
Looking at the official rankings on the UFC website, you will find no contenders listed in the women’s featherweight column, not even the name of current champion Cris Cyborg.
Since the UFC introduced this weight class in December 2016, the company was just unable to find suitable contenders to fill the void.
What mattered more at the time was the signing of former Invicta featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, who has been deemed as the most dominant female athlete for a while now, since Ronda Rousey lost her aura of invincibility to Holly Holm in late 2015.
For her part, Cyborg defeated all-comers that were put in front of her. From her first few fights in the UFC when she was fighting at a 140-pound catch-weight, to her most recent win at UFC 222, the Brazilian female fighter has been able to show why she is the queen of her division.
But while she is not fighting, the UFC would, of course, need to fill the void, which was why they decided to finalize a new women’s featherweight matchup for UFC 225. According to a report by MMA Fighting, the said fight will be between former bantamweight champion Holly Holm, and former Invicta featherweight champion Megan Anderson.
It was a matchup that came as a surprise to many, but apparently not to Cyborg.
“I’m not surprised. I said this was going to happen months ago,” Cyborg said in an interview with FanSided on Thursday. “It’s how the UFC works, no. 1 contender is going to fight someone I already beat.”
“The UFC knows Holly needs a couple wins so we can rematch,” Cyborg added. “Right now her record is terrible. She’s in the negative.”
Holm (11-4, with eight wins by knockout), is currently 1-3 in her last four fights. She last fought Cyborg at UFC 219 last December, where she lost via unanimous decision.
“The Preacher’s Daughter” will now be tasked to welcome Anderson into the UFC. It is a fight that Cyborg has high expectations for, especially from Anderson.
“The fight with Megan will be great. Megan’s a big girl and she will do her best in her first UFC fight,” Cyborg said. “I’m excited it will be the first 145-pound fight without a belt.”
UFC 225 is slated to happen on June 9th in Chicago, Illinois.
