Ronda Rousey’s Mum Pens Honest Blog Post Following UFC 207 Loss
Dr AnnMaria De Mars, mother to former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey has penned a heartfelt blog post following her daughter’s second loss in a row.
Rousey first came to prominence in February of 2013 at UFC 157 with her first round armbar victory over contender Liz Carmouche.
She then went on to win a further five fights in a row, finishing all but one of those fights in the first round. Rousey had looked invincible coming into her title fight against seasoned boxer Holly Holm in November 2015 at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia, but was instead knocked out in the second round after Holm’s boxing proved to be much too technical for the champion.
Thirteen months on, Rousey re-entered the octagon following a series of bizarre media blackouts where she refused to make appearances for the UFC, or participate in interviews with the media, who she was reportedly angry at for the way her last loss was reported on. Unfortunately, her return to the octagon lasted only 48 seconds, with current Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes brutally TKO’ing Rousey along the cage fence.
Rousey has her fair share of detractors that have piled on since her loss to Nunes, but AnnMaria De Mars has come out with a strong show of support for her daughter, despite a difference of opinion on her coaching staff, who De Mars has been vocal in her critique of.
“Those of you who want to criticize Ronda, I just want to point out a few things. First of all, I know her better than you and she is a smart, kind, talented, generous, hard-working person …Let me suggest that someone who has been world level athlete in two sports, written a best seller, acted in movies and made millions of dollars, all before the age of 30 has a pretty darn good track record.
On top of that, Ronda has been part of the USADA drug testing since she was 16 years old, never failed a drug test, always paid her taxes, never been arrested, never been to rehab, has zero divorces, zero DUIs and zero children [before she was able and willing to raise them]. While you might think that is to be expected, look how many celebrities (heck, look how many of your neighbours) can say that…
I am very proud of my daughter.”
In an interview with TMZ, De Mars was frank when asked if she’d like to see her daughter retire.
“I would like to see her retire,” she said. “I would have liked to see her retire a long time ago. Who wants to see their kid get hit?
“Cause she’s got a lot of talent in a lot of other things. Movies, writing, producing, she’s really, really smart. I told her that at the beginning when she started this.”
“I said you’re smart and beautiful — let the stupid people get punched in the face. Sorry stupid people.”
