WATCH: Sage Northcutt’s Hype Train Derailed By CM Punk Slayer Mickey Gall
The co-main event of UFC on Fox: VanZant vs. Waterson featured two up-and-comers that got their starts in the UFC thanks to stand out performances for smaller promotions.
Both Sage Northcutt and Mickey Gall were offered UFC contracts after being spotted on the promotion’s TV show Dana White: Lookin’ For A Fight and both have made considerable splashes since stepping up to the big time.
Gall famously called out CM Punk after impressing on the show and in the aftermath of his destruction of the wrestler-turned-fighter, wasted no time in calling out Sage Northcutt for his next fight.
“I got someone I want next,” Gall said in his post-fight interview. “The fight everyone wants to see; I want “Super” Sage Northcutt. I think that boy’s corny. I want to punch the spikes out of his hair. They say we’re “Dana White: Lookin’ For A Fight” young guns; let us bang out. They say guys like us might get protection but fu*k that, I want war!”
Northcutt responded to the call out in typical Northcutt style; smiling, polite and laid back. In a pre-fight interview he explained the reason he was keen for the matchup and also took a sly dig at his upcoming opponent:
“I like the idea of 170 (pounds),” Northcutt said. “I like that. So, it’s funny how a guy fighting 170 calls out a guy in a smaller weight class at 155. But that was funny and I’m looking forward to it.”
Gall was full of confidence going into the fight and predicted that he would either beat Northcutt standing up or on the ground.
“Pick your poison…I’m going to hurt him in either spot,” Gall said during a recent interview on “The MMA Hour.” “If I hit him with some shots, he might go to sleep. If we go to the ground, I am levels above him there. Yeah, I think my stand up is better than his and my ground is better than his.”
Gall controlled the bulk of the opening round, and Gall dropped Northcutt with huge right hand in the second round and then finished things off with a rear-naked choke.
“They called me a submission specialist, that’s Gracie jiu-jitsu,” said Gall (4-0), after the fight.
In the second, Northcutt twice dropped Gall, and appeared to taunt Gall when Gall got up after the second shot. But that’s when Gall responded.
After the bout, Gall said he’s going to compete at lightweight, called out the retired Dan Hardy, who recently said he wanted to make his return.
“Dan Hardy said he wanted a marquee fight for his return fight.” the New Jersey native said. “I want Hardy.”
