UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has been out of the octagon for over a year now, and fans are understandably getting restless.
The UFC’s lightweight division is one of the most entertaining weight classes to view, with a slew of talent including Khabib Nurmagomedov, interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and Edson Barboza all floating toward the top of the division to give McGregor some trouble upon his eventual return.
Winning the UFC lightweight title in November of 2016, McGregor put on a stellar showing when he knocked out former champion Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden, cementing his legacy as the first simultaneous two-division champion in the UFC.
McGregor then declared he would be taking some time off from the UFC in order to await the birth of his first child in May of 2017. He would then manage to talk his way into a boxing super-fight with boxing legend Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
McGregor would go on to lose the bout in the tenth round after he fatigued and was unable to defend himself from the onslaught of Mayweather, but would take home a tidy sum of money, well into the range of hundreds of millions of dollars, ensuring that he will never have to fight again if he so chooses.
Waiting in the wings for his return are Ferguson and Nurmagomedov, two men who are keen to stake their claims as kings in the lightweight division.
McGregor has said the men will have to beg him for him to make a return, with Nurmagomedov taunting the Irish champion on Twitter following McGregor’s declaration.
McGregor has now officially passed former heavyweight champion Frank Mir as going the longest period of time without defending his belt as a champion, clocking up 419 days with no defences at all.
While Mir was sidelined due to a motorcycle accident that saw him break his femur as well as every ligament in his knee, McGregor is currently healthy and is certainly capable of defending his title.
With so many killers at the top of the lightweight division, will he ever come back, or will the Irish phenom head for the hills and vacate his title? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
