Conor McGregor Erupts At Leading Boxing Journalist Over Floyd Mayweather

Conor McGregor erupted at members of the boxing media seated ringside at Madison Square Garden in the aftermath of pro debut of Irish Olympic boxer Michael Conlan in New York on Saturday. Approaching ESPN’s Dan Rafael, McGregor blew up over the rumored mega-fight between the reigning UFC lightweight champion and retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr.

UFC superstar McGregor, is a good buddy of Conlan’s and was on hand to walk him to the ring and offer support to his countrymen.

According Rafael, when McGregor exited the ring before the bout began, he walked along press row and playfully said hello to some of the writers who also cover MMA. When he got Rafael it was apparently clear he didn’t recognise him.

Rafeal reportedly avoided any awkwardness by joking that he didn’t know him only because he didn’t cover MMA. Telling him “I’m a boxing guy”.

Conlan went on to knock out Tim Ibarra in the third round and, and went into the ring to congratulate Conlan and give a brief interview.

In the aftermath of the bout, McGregor saw Rafael again and began blowing up over the rumored mega-fight between the reigning UFC lightweight champion and (formally?) retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. Rafael has been vocal in his opinion that that the McGregor Mayweather fight is a huge mismatch, and not only does McGregor have zero chance to win, but is of the opinion that no state athletic commission should sanction the fight.

Apparently McGregor doesn’t share his view.

“You’re the boxing guy? I’m the boxing guy. Watch me take over boxing,” McGregor roard. “Trust me on that. No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming. Trust me on that. When I step in there, I’m going to shock the whole goddamn world. Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes. Twenty-eight years of age, confident as a motherf*cker, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand. Trust me, I’m going to stop Floyd and you’re all going to eat your words. The whole world is going to eat their words.”

The exchange took place just two days after UFC president Dana White said “I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen” when asked about a potential Mayweather-McGregor fight during an interview with late-night host Conan O’Brien.
