Rafael dos Anjos DESTROYS Neil Magny In The First Round

UFC 215’s co-main event saw Rafael dos Anjos take on top ranked welterweight Neil Magny in front of a packed crowd in Edmonton, Alberta.

After a successful debut at 170lbs in which he scored a unanimous points decision over the top 15 ranked Tarec Saffiedine and propelled himself into the top 10, dos Anjos (26-9 before this fight) faced a step up in competition when he took on the number six ranked Magny.

Magny (19-5 before this fight) has been in red hot form for years now and came into this one having won 11 of his previous 13 bouts with notable victories over ex-champ Johny Hendricks and Kelvin Gastelum.

“I feel great for a potential title shot after this win,” Magny said before the fight. “The biggest thing is to focus on beating dos Anjos first, but I’m pretty sure a title shot is within reach with an impressive performance against dos Anjos.”

After taking eight months off in order to rehabilitate his body, Magny said that he felt healthy and better than ever before.

“This has been the longest layoff I’ve had in my entire professional career,” Magny stated. “I’m just fortunate enough to be back. I had a back and neck injury that kept me from training. It was getting to the point where it was possibly going to need surgery, but through physical therapy and those things I was able to get back to training and avoid surgery.”

It promised to be an interesting clash of styles: the 5ft 8 dos Anjos is a pressure fighter who likes to cut off the cage, walk his opponents down, and attack with flurries of heavy punches and kicks while the 6 ft 3 Magny likes to fight at distance and utilise his strong clinch game.

Whoever managed to force their style of fighting on the other would have a huge advantage in this one.

dos Anjos really looks up to Magny…

Despite Magny’s clear reach advantage, RDA was able to trip him in the first few seconds of the fight, taking him to the ground. The fight remained on the ground for the remaining moments of the fight, with Dos Anjos finishing Magny with an arm triangle choke.
