WATCH: UFC218 Produces “One Of The Greatest Fights In UFC History” According To Joe Rogan
UFC 218’s prelim throwdown between Yancy Medeiros and Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira did not disappoint with an entertaining, hard-hitting contest between the two welterweights. The bloody, see-sawing affair has been touted as a Fight of the Year contender as the Hawaiian took the honours at 2:02 in the final round.
There was plenty of physicality on display as the two barely stopped for breath during the 3 rounds. An illegal knee from the Brazillian, Oliveira was the only real chance the pair broke the intensity as Medeiros needed a short recovery break. No ill feeling lingered between the two as they hugged to open the second round.
The second round saw a series of kicks from Oliveira absorbed and countered by Medeiros with a massive left hand that left ‘Cowboy’ stunned and a little wobbly. The middle round was also where Medeiros really found his range and accuracy, landing several decisive blows to take a small advantage into the final.
In contrast to the second, Oliveira looked to have the wood over his Hawaiian opponent at the start of the third round. He landed a barrage of punches at the fleeing Medeiros before executing a beautiful takedown. However, after recovering from this, Medeiros unleashed on a severely fatigued Oliveira, getting him to the fence before he succumbed to punches. Medeiros was declared the winner by TKO.
Post-fight, Medeiros paid tribute to Oliveira before a packed house in Detroit, saying
“Hat’s off to Oliveira, he’s a cowboy and all cowboys are tough,” Medeiros said. “But it was a war and I’m here to entertain.”
See the thrilling end to the fight below. These two gave it a red hot crack!
