If you’ve never heard of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Pedro Sauer before, you’re in for a good little trip down memory lane.
Pedro Sauer is one of the greatest Jiu Jitsu practitioners ever, as voted by the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC), and is a direct student of Rickson Gracie, son of the great Helio Gracie and father to Royce Gracie, the winner of UFC 1 and the man who brought Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to a much wider audience.
Sauer is well known for pioneering Jiu Jitsu in America’s southwest, where he became one of the most highly regarded instructors in the country. He was eventually challenged to a fight with Lance Bachelor, a 250-pound bodybuilder with a serious anger issue it seems, aimed squarely at Sauer’s chosen martial art. Bachelor won the Mr Utah bodybuilding competition back in 1992, a year before UFC 1, leading him to think he was some sort of bad-ass.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has always been sold as a martial art that should allow a smaller trained men to defeat men much larger than themselves. Of course, those men have to not have any idea what they’re doing on the ground, but still, it’s pretty clear from the outset of this video that Bachelor had no idea what he was doing standing up either.
Taking a number of punches to the face and kicks to the body, Bachelor panics and takes Sauer to the ground, exactly where he wants to be. Sauer dictates the pace of the fight, despite the fact that Bachelor is covered in vaseline and sweat. Sauer plays butterfly guard, trying to sweep Bachelor from the bottom.
He eventually manages to tire the former Mr Utah, who has been trying to throw heavy strikes and elbows from inside Sauer’s guard. Sauer manages to get ahold of Bachelor’s arm, quickly locking up an armbar. When Bachelor refuses to tap, Sauer lets the arm go. Bachelor went on to declare that the fight had ended early and been called off by Sauer’s students, meaning he should have won the bout, despite Sauer being uninjured and Bachelor having an extremely messed up face.
